Guidelines for applying for your Canadian study permit
Updated over a week ago

Once you receive your Letter of Acceptance (LOA) and Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL), it’s time to apply for your Canadian study permit. A study permit is a document issued by the Canadian government that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. Most foreign nationals need this permit to study in Canada.

Check the requirements

To ensure a smooth application process, visit the Government of Canada’s guide, enter the name of your country, and review the detailed instructions on what you need to provide for your study permit application.

Check Processing Times

Make sure to check the approximate processing times for your visa to plan accordingly.

Complete Your Medical Examination

Find out if you need a medical exam and how to arrange it by locating a Panel Physician.

If you’re required to do a medical exam, try to complete an upfront medical exam. Complete the medical examination, receive the e-medical receipt, and submit it with the rest of your application to IRCC. An e-medical receipt is proof that you have completed the immigration medical examination, which is often required for study permit applications.

Prepare your documents

Check the study permit document checklist for required documents. Make sure you visit the visa office instructions, and enter the name of your country, to see all the specific requirements for your country. Typically, you will need:

  • Passport: Current and previous ones.

  • Digital Photo: Meeting the requirements of the visa application photograph specifications.

  • Letter of Explanation: see how to write a Letter of Explanation.

  • Letter of Acceptance (LOA)

  • Work-Integrated Permit Letter (If applicable): Attach to the acceptance letter email from the school.

  • Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)

  • Proof of Ties to Your Home Country: Such as family or community responsibilities, employer approval for your leave, proof of owning a business or property, etc.

  • Proof of Financial Support: As an international student, you need to provide proof that you have the financial means to support yourself during your stay, whether you applied and received a Passage loan or paid the tuition fee yourself. For more information, refer to our guidelines for financial proof in study permit applications.

  • Education Documents: Transcripts, certificates, diplomas, WAEC/NECO if applicable.

  • Language test result

  • Resume

  • Marriage License/Certificate (If applicable)

Submit your application

Create an account and submit your application through the IRCC website.
